Food in India is a little spicy by your standards, and unless you dine in an exclusive restaurant where you could put in a request, you don't really have a choice. Indian cuisine is very popular abroad, and you've surely tried it sometime in your own country.

After all traveling is about different cultures, traditions and local flavor. There are many good places and also exclusive restaurants in busy tourist areas everywhere. You should spot one easily enough.

Try to stick to non vegetarian or vegan curries and naan, romali rotis or kulchas. These are Indian breads – soft, tasty and easy to digest. Also, unless it’s a high end restaurant, keep away from fish. Stick to meat and poultry which are cooked in India in an amazing variety.

Biryani (meat cooked with long grain rice and exotic spices) is an Indian specialty you may have heard of but it’s a little oily and heavy. Pork is generally not served anywhere in India except at expensive speciality restaurants and in Goa and the North East.

Breakfast in India would normally consist of idlis, vadas, masala dosa, plain dosas and poori bhaji as the main items on the menu of almost all hotels across India and these are recommended.

A typical breakfast in a good restaurant anywhere in India should not cost you more than rs.60 including tea/ coffee. South India is known for its filter coffee.

In high end restaurants, a meal could start at rs.500 per person plus taxes. Air conditioned restaurants in India attract an additional luxury tax.

Note - Beef is a sensitive issue in India and you are advised not to ask for it in restaurants.
