AIRPORTS AND VISAS

There are 12 international and over 80 domestic airports in India with Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai being the most common point of entry into India. Like all international airports elsewhere, carrying of prohibited items including weapons, drugs etc is banned. 

With the terrorism problem, security at airports is very strict and rules are enforced without any exception.

Passport - All foreign tourists desiring to visit India must possess a valid passport.
Visa – There is no provision for “Visa on Arrival” in India and tourists must possess a valid Indian visa before they arrive in this country. Citizens of Nepal and Bhutan do not require a visa to enter India.


With effect from 17th April 2018 , all Bhutanese / Nepalese nationals arriving / entering India from China, Hong Kong, Macau, Pakistan and Maldives, must possess a Valid Indian Visa.

Citizens of Maldives do not require a visa for entry into India for a period of 90 days. No fee is charged for immigration facilities at airports. It may take about 10 – 14 days to process your Indian visa depending on the location.

Tourist visas for a six month stay each time from the date of issue are available. Ten year tourist visas for a maximum stay of six months each time are available to US citizens who are frequent visitors to India. It is not possible to extend this type of visa for over six months at a time.

For Non US residents a five year tourist visa is available for a maximum stay of six months at a time. Foreigners on tourist visa to India for up to six months are not required to register themselves and can move about freely around the country except to restricted/ prohibited areas.

Student Visas are issued for a period of one year and can be renewed every year till the duration of the course.

Customs Regulations – Each tourist is permitted to bring n one bottle of whisky (950 ml or less), 200 cigarettes and small items like perfumes, cosmetics etc

It is advised to enter larger items like video cameras and other equipment you intend taking back with you in the “Tourist Baggage Re export Form” or TBRE which has to be submitted at the time of departure from the country.
